Reducing partisan hostility one convo at a time
Hey moms,
Good news — after bipartisan pushback, the Trump administration is releasing the nearly $7 billion dollars it was illegally withholding from K-12 public education, which we took action on earlier this month. Phew!
This week’s action is to read through this very short guide on “How to talk to people you disagree with politically.” Try out some of the suggestions if you feel up to it. Even if you don’t have any of these convos this week, you’ll be a little more prepared whenever the occasion presents itself.
Why this action? This isn’t about convincing everyone to share our own political beliefs; rather, it’s about helping to reduce partisan animosity. Partisan hostility is one of the “most pertinent threats to US democracy” (along with antidemocratic attitudes and acceptance of political violence). Finding ways to bridge political differences can help address the threat to US democracy in the long run. Ideally, these conversations also could bring others into the coalition of Americans who will protect our democracy, regardless of party affiliation or political views.
Want to go deeper? Sign up for a conversation through One Small Step (which brings together people with different views for a non-political conversation to combat polarization), or check out Braver Angels or other groups that aim to bridge divides.
Look at you, taking action! Look at us, doing it together.
In solidarity and with love,
Moms for Democracy
