Moms for Democracy - 6/5
Community before strategy, and our weekly action - plan to protest, or talk

Hey moms,
We’re so glad to be building this community together. We know many of us are exhausted and devastated by what’s happening in our country – the cruelty and corruption and attacks on our freedoms – but we also see the ENERGY that we get from conversations with moms who are not okay with what’s happening. We see the POWER that moms have to stand up together to protect our democracy and our kids’ futures.
As you help build this coalition with us, we’re starting from the premise of community before strategy. Together, we will try out different things and see what works. Our approach may evolve. But we know that we are stronger together, and that together we can do a lot.
Our idea for this newsletter? Weekly-ish emails that feature an easy and effective action to protect US democracy. We know moms are busy, so we’ll keep the emails short, and most of the actions will be quick. And we know moms get stuff done, so we’ll focus on effective actions with a clear rationale.
This week’s action is to make a plan to attend the June 14 No Kings Protest, and invite 3 friends to join you. Because in America, we don’t have a king – our government is for the people, by the people. (Bonus points if you make a sign or find a flag to bring with you.)
Why this action? Protest is important for democracy! Protesting is one of the strongest tools we have in combating rising authoritarianism, and even a small group can have a large impact.
If you’re not able or ready to join the No Kings protest (or you’re in DC), then your action is to find a friend this week and talk. Share your concerns about what’s happening (you can refer to our “About” page if that helps) – but also give them hope. Americans are rejecting cruelty and corruption; they are resisting authoritarianism. There were more than 5000 protests in the first 100 days of the current administration, with an estimated 3 million people joining the Hands Off protests in April. Moms are campaigning for office, because they know America can do better. Neighbors are protecting their neighbors. Even when things feel overwhelming, people are rising to the challenge. And so will we.
Why this action? Talking helps! Talking gives us hope, which inspires us to act. (That’s what climate scientists have found, and we think it’s just as true for protecting democracy!) And we know that resistance is not one-size-fits-all.
Look at you, taking action! Look at us, doing it together.
In solidarity and with love,
Moms for Democracy
